Week 9: Product / Customer Solution

Learning objectives

  • Classify products and services.
  • Explain PLC stages and product-line decisions.
  • Discuss branding, brand equity, and services marketing basics.

In the customer language of the 4Cs, product is the customer solution. A product is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use, or consumption that might satisfy a need or want — including services, experiences, and ideas.

Classification snapshots

  • Consumer products — Convenience, shopping, specialty, unsought.
  • Industrial products — Materials and parts, capital items, supplies and services.
  • Services — Intangible, inseparable, variable, perishable (IIVP challenges).

Product Life Cycle (PLC) and line management

Typical PLC stages: introduction, growth, maturity, decline — each with different sales, profit, and marketing-mix emphasis. Product line decisions include line length, stretching (up/down), filling, and modernization. Portfolio thinking avoids pouring resources into declining items without a plan.

Branding and brand equity

A brand is a name, term, sign, symbol, or design (or combination) that identifies and differentiates. Brand equity is the differential effect that knowing the brand name has on customer response. Strong equity supports premium pricing, loyalty, and brand extensions — if stretch is credible.

Managing brands includes choosing brand elements, deciding brand architecture (individual vs family brands), and protecting reputation through consistent delivery.

Services marketing

Because services are intangible and variable, firms manage people, process, and physical evidence in addition to the classic Ps. Service quality gaps (expectation vs perception) are a core diagnostic tool.

Pakistan example A regional clothing label building brand equity through consistent stitching quality and honest return policies may outperform louder advertising. A private college markets an intangible service — education — so campus cues, faculty communication, and alumni outcomes become physical evidence and proof.
