Week 13: Promotion / Integrated Marketing Communication
Learning objectives
- List the promotion mix tools.
- Explain IMC and why message consistency matters.
- Relate promotion to the rest of the marketing mix.
Promotion is how firms communicate customer value. Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) carefully integrates and coordinates company communication channels to deliver a clear, consistent, and compelling message about the organization and its products.
The promotion mix (marketing communications mix)
- Advertising — Paid, non-personal presentation by an identified sponsor.
- Sales promotion — Short-term incentives to encourage purchase or sale.
- Personal selling — Personal presentation by the sales force for the purpose of making sales and building relationships.
- Public relations — Building good relations with publics via favorable publicity, corporate image, and issue management.
- Direct and digital marketing — Engaging directly with targeted individuals to obtain immediate response and cultivate relationships (email, mobile, social, web).
IMC fights the problem of fragmented messages across agencies, platforms, and teams. Customers experience one brand — even if the org chart is siloed.
Pakistan example
A beverage launch that runs TV-style video online, in-store sampling, influencer posts, and retailer schemes should share the same core promise (refreshment, occasion, or status). If ads say premium while trade promotions dump price everywhere, the position collapses.
Weeks 14–15 deepen communication steps, advertising/sales promotion planning, push/pull, and personal selling.
Key terms
- IMC
- Coordinating communication channels for a clear, consistent, compelling brand message.

- Match each promotion tool to a goal: awareness, trial, relationship repair.
- Give an example of conflicting messages across two channels.
